Save Our Cemeteries was founded in 1974 in response to the proposed demolition of the wall vaults surrounding historic St. Louis Cemetery No. 2.
This group, led by local preservationist Marie Louise Christovich, banded together to advocate against the demolition. After much debate and public outcry over the plans for the vaults, the group eventually partnered with the Archdiocese of New Orleans to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to save and restore the vaults.
Seeing the additional need in the other 31+ cemeteries of New Orleans, the group Save Our Cemeteries was formed.
Save Our Cemeteries is dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and protection of the historic cemeteries of New Orleans through restoration, education and advocacy.
Current programs include the restoration of abandoned tombs, cemetery clean-ups and maintenance projects, cemetery walking tours, educational lectures, an annual Cemetery Seminar, an annual 1-Mile, 5K Run/Walk through Metairie Cemetery, and an annual gala, the All Saints Soiree.
