It
may be difficult to protect your family tomb or grave-site from theft
and vandalism without actually being there around the clock. But there
are ways to document the site in case of a crime.
- If you own
a tomb, please remember that it is important to check it for missing
items at each visit.
- Take photographs
from all angles possible and record the date. Keep these in a safe
place.
- Cemetery statuary
can be very similar. Try to find marks that make yours unique and
record them.
- If something
is missing, report it not only to the cemetery operator, but most
importantly to the police department. If something is stolen from
your site and recovered by the police, your documentation will allow
them to return the item to you easily.
- If possible,
visit your tomb regularly. A well cared for tomb or a site with flowers
left regularly may act as a deterrent to thieves looking for an abandoned
tomb to rob. SOC provides security at several New Orleans cemeteries
on holidays and All Saints' Day. Call our office to find out when
is the best time to visit.
