Tombs by Twilight Tour Starts Next Weekend (9/26)!

Exclusive: “Tombs by Twilight” TourWill you be joining us next Saturday, September 26th for our first “Tombs by Twilight” tour? With the beautiful fall weather, it’s a wonderful time to visit, and we’re very excited to offer our first tour of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 at dusk. “Tombs by Twilight” tours, offered exclusively through Save Our Cemeteries, will depart from Richard Fiske’s Martini Bar (located in the Chateau LeMoyne Hotel), & return to the bar after the cemetery tour for complimentary drinks and appetizers. Tour is only available to persons 21 years of age and older.

• September 26, 2015, 6:00 pm.
• October 24, 2015, 5:30 pm.
• November 28, 2015, 4:00 pm.
• December 26, 2015, 4:00 pm.

Founded in 1789 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is located just steps outside of the French Quarter at the corner of St. Louis & Basin Streets. It is the burial ground of some of the most illustrious citizens of New Orleans, including Etienne de Bore, pioneer in sugar development; Daniel Clark, financial supporter of the American Revolution; Paul Morphy, world famous chess champion; and other local and national figures.

Notable structures include the wall vaults, the supposed final resting place of Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau, and the magnificent tombs of the French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish pleasure & aid society groups.

St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is the oldest existing cemetery in New Orleans. It is a maze of wall vaults, family tombs, and society tombs that artistically showcase the unique burial customs & traditions of New Orleans.

Save Our Cemeteries is the only non-profit in New Orleans that offers cemetery tours. Proceeds from your tour ticket price will go directly towards our mission of cemetery restoration, education and advocacy.

Save Our Cemeteries Announces “Tombs By Twilight” Tour

SAVE OUR CEMETERIES ANNOUNCES “TOMBS BY TWILIGHT” TOUR

Non-profit To Provide Exclusive Evening Tour Of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1

NEW ORLEANS, LA – September 1, 2015 – Save Our Cemeteries, in partnership with the Archdiocese of New Orleans, announced today that it will provide tourists and locals with a unique tour of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 at dusk. This special tour is exclusive only to Save Our Cemeteries, no other tour company has been granted access to the cemetery after normal cemetery hours. This special tour will be held on the fourth Saturday of each month starting September 26, 2015.

Exclusive: “Tombs by Twilight” TourThe special tour will include a complimentary refreshment, appetizer, gift, tour pamphlet and walking tour of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Proceeds from the tour will benefit continuing restoration and preservation efforts at St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, and will ensure the beautiful and iconic structures within are protected for generations to come.

“We wish to thank the Archdiocese of New Orleans for the opportunity and privilege in providing the public with a new and unique cemetery tour experience” states Amanda Walker, Executive Director at Save Our Cemeteries. Ms. Walker continues, “The proceeds from this special tour will go to help our ongoing and future preservation and restoration projects in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1.”

All Saints Day, November 1

Here are the activities that we have planned for All Saints Day on Tuesday:

  • Security will be provided in Lafayette Cemetery No. 2 and St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 from 9am-12pm.
  • Information tables will be staffed at Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, and St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 from 9am-12pm.
  • There will be a special tour of St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 at 10:00am. Tickets are $15 for SOC members and $18 for non-members, and reservations are required. To attend the tour, please RSVP to 504-525-3377.
  • Volunteers will be cleaning, priming & painting historic ironwork throughout St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 from 10am-12noon. To participate, email membership@saveourcemeteries.org or call 504-525-3377.

Halloween Tour of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1

Looking for something fun to do on Halloween morning?

Save Our Cemeteries will be offering a special tour of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, just outside the French Quarter on Monday, October 31, 2011, at 10:00am.

Tickets are $12 per person. Reservations are required, but costumes are optional. To attend, please call 504-525-3377.
