Ironwork Restoration Project – Volunteers Needed

The next volunteer-friendly Restoration Project will be on January 21, 2012 from 9:00am-noon.

If you’d like to help restore antebellum ironwork in historic St. Louis Cemetery No. 2, the largest Creole cemetery in New Orleans, please sign up with Hands On New Orleans & we’ll reserve a spot for you.

All Saints Day, November 1

Here are the activities that we have planned for All Saints Day on Tuesday:

  • Security will be provided in Lafayette Cemetery No. 2 and St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 from 9am-12pm.
  • Information tables will be staffed at Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, and St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 from 9am-12pm.
  • There will be a special tour of St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 at 10:00am. Tickets are $15 for SOC members and $18 for non-members, and reservations are required. To attend the tour, please RSVP to 504-525-3377.
  • Volunteers will be cleaning, priming & painting historic ironwork throughout St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 from 10am-12noon. To participate, email membership@saveourcemeteries.org or call 504-525-3377.

Tour of St. Louis Cemetery No. 2

Save Our Cemeteries is offering a special, rare tour of St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 on November 1, 2011, at 10:00am.

St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 was established in 1823 and is located in the Faubourg Treme neighborhood, three blocks behind St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. It is the largest early Creole cemetery in New Orleans, covering three city blocks. The cemetery contains one of the finest collections of antebellum mortuary art in the South and is the final resting place for significant jazz musicians, local war heroes, and even a notorious pirate.

Tickets for the tour are $15 for SOC members & $18 for non-members and reservations are required. To RSVP, please call 504-525-3377.

Ironwork in St. Louis Cemetery No. 2

Interested in helping restore the beautiful ironwork in historic St. Louis Cemetery No. 2?

Come join us on Sunday, October 23, 2011, as we carefully scrape off rust, clean, paint & prime the ironwork of one of the abandoned tombs in the cemetery. Volunteers must be over 16 years old, and willing to get dirty.
