NOLA Historical Art: $30.00 - $36.00
Select one of the three tombs featured from Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 and St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Lafayette Cemetery, located at Washington Avenue and Prytania Street is in the heart of New Orleans' Garden District, which was settled by Americans and new immigrants following the Louisiana Purchase. The land for the cemetery was purchased in 1832 as the municipal cemetery for the City of Lafayette (as that area of town was called). Yellow Fever devastated the population of new immigrants to New Orleans in a series of plagues in the 1800s and many Irish and German victims were buried here.

St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is the oldest surviving burial ground with tombs dating to the 1780's. it was the second built in the city, established when New Orleans was under rule of the Spanish in 1789. The layout of paths and plots is meandering and the tombs show great architectural influence from the Spanish and to a lesser degree, the French.

From left to right, the first tomb, from Lafayette No. 1, is distinctive for its steps leading to the vault, the first step displaying an inlaid cross. The second is of the supposed tomb of Marie Laveau from St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, notorious voodoo queen. The third, also from Lafayette No. 1, is a basic family tomb style showing the wonderful colorful lime-wash that is no longer popular, but was common in the early 19th century. Each ceramic tomb has a removable roof for storage of small items. They measure approximately 6" tall and 3" wide.
