Before & After completed renovation in St. Louis Cemetery No I

Save Our Cemeteries was the recipient of a $10,000 Gulf Coast Restoration Fund grant from Tourism Cares to assist in the debris removal and re-landscaping of St. Louis Cemetery #1, New Orleans oldest extant cemetery founded in 1789.

Tourism Cares is a non-profit public charity, supported by the tourism industry, that “gives back” through scholarships to tourism students and grants to cultural and historic sites throughout the world.  The grant was used to remove dead vegetation and trees destroyed by the post-Katrina flood waters, and install new trees and plantings.  Through this effort, we hope to cultivate a sense of renewal and revival at this site so important to New Orleans history and culture.

Work began on September 5th, 2006 as the landscaping crew removed dead trees and vegetation and prepared the soil for planting.  In October, Palms, Jasmine, Oleander and Holly were installed in the areas slated for re-landscaping.
Work was complete just in time for the All Saints’ Day visitors. Part of the grant is also funding the maintenance of these plantings to insure their vitality through the winter months.  Stop by and see what we’ve done - take a cemetery tour!
