Come join Save Our Cemeteries on Sunday, September 25th, 2016 and Monday October 2, 2016, and help make a difference in the community! We will be conducting clean-ups in Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 on both dates from 9:00am until 12:00pm, with the goal of making significant strides clipping ferns and invasive vegetation, and removing trash from the cemetery – but we can’t do it without help.

No special skills are needed to join us, but plan to wear clothing and footwear appropriate for potentially messy, outside work. We will supply gloves, hand tools and other cleaning materials and supplies.

If you are interested in volunteering for this clean-up, please email your contact information to stephanie@saveourcemeteries.org.

Event Date/Time: Saturday, April 2, 9 AM – 12 PM
Event Location: Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, 1400 Washington Ave, New Orleans, Louisiana 70130

Due to the heavy rainfall the week of March 12th, we have rescheduled the second phase of our clean-up in Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 to April 2nd, 2016 from 9:00am – 12:00pm. If you are interested in participating, please forward your contact information (full name, preferred email address) to soc@saveourcemeteries.org.

Earlier this month, on March 5th, Save Our Cemeteries partnered with the Tulane TIDES program to volunteer in Lafayette Cemetery No. 1. The project was overseen by Michelle Duhon, of the Restoration Committee, who described the event as a great success: “We broke up into 3 groups: the largest number of kids went through the cemetery cutting weeds and picking up trash. We put a few students on the roof of the wall vaults, cleaning up leaves and debris. I paired 3 students with one of my workers, and had them put a coat of limewash on the Fireman’s Tomb. They were very excited to get to mix and apply limewash!”

We look forward to continuing work in a different area of the cemetery with our volunteers in April, and hope you will consider joining us!
