Karstendiek Tomb Restoration Update

front facade

We are pleased to announce that the restoration of the Karstendiek Tomb is well underway. Due to your support, Irish Channel Iron Works has been working with us in order to restore this very important example of cast iron tomb architecture. All of the major areas of rust have been treated and are in the final stages of being repaired. The areas of concern on the roof, where water was entering, is currently being addressed and a water-tight welded barrier is being built up in order to ensure against future water damage. Once all repairs are complete on the bodies of the four facades the decorative eternal flame cornice will be restored using infill of new casts made from the originals.

We had an amazing group of dedicated volunteers this morning at Lafayette Cemetery No. 2! Thank you to the wonderful folks with City Year New Orleans for coming out and lending a hand – with so many hardworking people joining together, we were able to remove trash, debris and invasive vegetation from all 4 squares of the cemetery, and our scrub team tackled removing vegetative growth from several tombs. It’s incredible what can be accomplished when we come together.

Come join Save Our Cemeteries on Sunday, September 25th, 2016 and Monday October 2, 2016, and help make a difference in the community! We will be conducting clean-ups in Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 on both dates from 9:00am until 12:00pm, with the goal of making significant strides clipping ferns and invasive vegetation, and removing trash from the cemetery – but we can’t do it without help.

No special skills are needed to join us, but plan to wear clothing and footwear appropriate for potentially messy, outside work. We will supply gloves, hand tools and other cleaning materials and supplies.

If you are interested in volunteering for this clean-up, please email your contact information to stephanie@saveourcemeteries.org.
